A side project from Wilco members John Stirratt and Pat Sansone, The Autumn Defense released their first album, The Green Hour, in 2001. Almost a decade on, comes their fourth full-length, Once Around. Fans of gentler Wilco songs such as "Either Way" or "Sky Blue Sky" will find much to admire in an album with hazy echoes of 1970s soft-rock (Wings, Supertramp). Two tracks in particular really stand out: the lovelorn melancholy of "Don't Know" and the closing track "There Will Always Be a Way." Taken as a whole, however, the album is clichéd in terms of lyrics (especially on "Tell Me What You Want" and 'The Swallows of London") and drifts far too often into colorless monotony, lacking Wilco's texture and bite.
