On Consolation E.P. Detroit scum-rockers Protomartyr collaborate for the second time with R. Ring members Kelley Deal (also of The Breeders) and Mike Montgomery to create a four-song Black-Lodge-dream of personal and political apocalypse.

On "Wait" singer Joe Casey pleads "Keep me above this filth" and while, instantly, you are reminded of The Jesus Lizard and The Fall as the scattershot venom drops from his lips, you are equally able to hear the huge influence this band has had on new, vital artists like Shame and Idles.

"Same Face In a Different Mirror" staggers, swaggering and sputtering, slyly slipping in unmistakable melodies and the odd moment of kindness. "We are love," Casey mumbles, "With this, who can be against us?"

On "Wheel of Fortune," anxiety-inducing guitar squeal gives way to a gothic fairytale, warped Disney soundscape, Casey spitting bile at the corporate, the political, and humanity itself, "Don't trust those that line up behind you" he warns before he and Deal refresh us sweetly with the choral refrain "I decide who lives and who dies." It's a world-ender of a song, batting away the horror with one hand, drawing it closer to the heart with the other.

Closing up with the swooning squall of "You Win Again," Casey notes, "I grow weak, you win again," utterly defeated. The music disagrees though, charging forward with renewed vigor, muscle, and heft, Deal's voice rising, supernaturally, from the chaos.

As ever, Protomartyr deliver absolutely unmissable, essential music for and from the darkest of hearts. (www.protomartyrband.com)
