Raze is a barebones B-movie about 50 women, kidnapped and conscripted into one-on-one death matches for the amusement of a secret society, and with the lives of their loved ones at stake. Using its small budget to its advantage, Raze keeps the fights frequent and the focus tight, but never fully lives up to its premise. Stuntwoman Zoë Bell (best known for her role in Quentin Tarantino’s chapter of Grindhouse) is more than capable as tortured protagonist Sabrina, but the supporting characters suffer from an on-the-nose script and acting which ranges from passable to cringe-worthy. The fights are visceral and gruesome without going too far, but by the sixth or seventh bout, the lack of variation becomes noticeable and the outcomes disappointingly predictable. The film trips itself up in the final act, wanting to be both a bitter morality tale and a go-for-broke bloodbath, but ultimately succeeding as neither.
