There are no adults in Alexandria. In the wake of their mysterious collective departure, Ben Schiller, her sister, best friend, and the rest of the town’s high schoolers try to live as normal a life as possible. That’s harder said than done, though, when someone—or something—is killing the kids off one by one, and hormones get in the way of everything.
Liz Suburbia’s exploration of high school is far more grounded than it sounds. Weird things happen in the background, but the forefront is dominated by honest, recognizable depictions of experiences shared by teenagers across the world. Suburbia’s attention to detail (including references to obscure movies and pop culture cult hits) creates an impressively fully realized world that catapults and adult reader back to those four years in which everything changes.
