Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé: Criterion Collection DVD (Criterion)

Criterion once again shines with this 3-disc release of French filmmaker Jean Painlevé’s scientific films, which largely feature underwater creatures such as the sea horse and the sea urchin. Not only is the set comprehensive, it’s also surprising, in that it also doubles as an essential release for Yo La Tengo fans. For the past seven years, the band has been performing an hour and a half of original music to accompany several of Painlevé’s films at special shows. An interview with the band is included as is their entire set on disc one. The original films with scores that include odd jazz tunes are also included for purists and the curious alike.

Disc two features two more hours of oddball documentaries, and the third disc features an 8-part French television series called Jean Painlevé Through His Films that runs nearly three hours long. It’s a lot to get through; the set also features a gorgeous 24-page insert that includes information an all of the films (which range in years from 1925-1982) and an incredible essay from cinema nut Scott MacDonald. Make no mistake; these are no ordinary nature documentaries; these alien images are so hauntingly and beautifully captured it’s as if you’re watching science fiction films. Criterion once again shows everybody how it’s done. Don’t hesitate, this is sure to be one of the best releases of the year. (www.criterion.com)
