Sex Pistols - The TV Tapes

For a DVD that presents TV appearances by the Sex Pistols, one can’t help but be surprised that only a very short segment of their infamous 1976 appearance on Bill Grundy’s U.K. show is included, considering its powder-keg cultural impact. Otherwise, this compilation serves as a visual timeline that features some valuable early footage.
Roughly a fourth of these segments involve the Sex Pistols before their breakup in early 1978. British TV shows spotlight the band during a time when punk’s ripples are being felt, including a visit with the band backstage at an early gig (before Sid Vicious had replaced Glen Matlock on bass) and a look at the rise of punk during the Jubilee year. Following a clip from the first stop on their U.S. tour, one of the disc’s most memorable pieces involves an interviewer following an “incognito” John Lydon on a walk for a thorough post-Pistols discussion, during which they are trailed by a swarm of children.
The rest of the disc touches on Public Image Ltd. (including a brief non-interview from 1979) before moving into their reunions and later sit-downs with the press. At one point Lydon is asked, “Do you think it’s interesting that you and the Pistols have become something that’s been identified as actually being quintessentially British?”
He thoughtfullly replies, “I think it’s wonderful because that’s what we are. I’m teapots at dawn and I’m proud of it, you know? I’m from the old school, and I like it… But at the same time, bang-on, dead on the money, just telling you exactly as it is and getting away with it. That’s an achievement.” (www.mvd2b.com)
