The Belle Brigade

May 19, 2011 #36 - Music vs. Comedy
Los Angeles’ The Bell Brigade—fronted by siblings Barbara and Ethan Gruska (whose grandfather is film composer John Williams)—rocks like the self-help version of Fleetwood Mac. But even appearances from Jenny Lewis and Inara George can’t hide the fact that the music leans heavily on banal pleasantries and alt-folk clichés. “There will always be someone better than you/even if you’re the best,” the Gruskas harmonize on “Losers.” With their album proving enthusiasm is unable to trump a lack of innovation, and happy siblings can’t muster the same passion as quarreling lovers, never a truer phase was sung. This guy doesn’t know what the hell he is talking about. This album should be certified gold at least three times. There may be a few cliches in the mix, but they are true cliches that people these days need to be reminded of.
