Though the album presents a full band behind them, Los Angeles’ Belle Brigade is a duo at its core. Siblings Ethan and Barbara Gruska (whose grandfather is film composer John Williams) achieve familial harmonies while simultaneously providing the other with a fitting counterpoint throughout their exuberant self-titled debut. Yet, even in the midst of what seems like perfect synchronicity, the music retains its sense of unpolished playfulness. Harkening back, if only in moments, to Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, and (just a trace in “Rusted Wheel”) Prince, The Belle Brigade yields a catchy concoction with positive notes. Highly palatable.
