The Book of Grickle is a collection of comic stories from Graham Annable, who has a background in animation for TV, video games, and film (including working as a storyboard artist on Coraline). The cartooning is brilliant—using simple lines to convey ideas, motion, and emotion. Annable occasionally uses more lines or shading that contrast with the simpler figures, making them seem all the more comical, pathetic, and cute.
The back cover copy points to Grickle's poignancy, and I definitely agree that there's poignancy aplenty. The book's humor trends toward more of The Office TV show's style, putting characters in incredibly awkward situations. It's not exactly gag-a-minute (though there is some gag humor). I found it amusing, and a decent read, but while I agree that it's humorous, I disagree with the assessment that it's hilarious, another term found in the cover copy. Regardless, Grickle is worth your time, even if you'll be more likely to say "huh!" than "ha-ha." (www.darkhorse.com)
