The premise of The Carrie Diaries is simple: Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City in her teen years. The year is 1984, and 16-year-old Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb), recently motherless, lives in Connecticut with her father and younger sister. At home, her group of friends is coming of age and an Abercrombie-esque potential love interest (Austin Butler) simmers in the background. At an internship in Manhattan, Carrie aids Interview Magazine's style editor (Doctor Who's Freema Agyeman) in stealing an outfit and ends up drinking champagne from the bottle with her that evening. On the average teenage show, this experience would result in the protagonist returning home regretting her actions. For Carrie, this is when the love affair with New York City begins.

Much like Sex and the City, Diaries is about the fashion, but unlike its predecessor, it's also about the musicwhich takes creative license with songs spanning from 1981 to 1989. The Sixteen Candles-ish Diaries is a teenage show, despite the fact that viewers who are the Sex and the City Carrie's age are the ones who grew up in this era. There is no attraction in living through the most awkward years of your life all over again. (
