The Gate: Monstrous Special Edition

It's hard to believe that the kid in The Gate grew up to play the big bad in Blade. Stephen Dorff plays Glen, a kid in the suburbs who meets creatures in his backyard. Sound familiar? Well, these creatures don't like Reese's Pieces, and they emerge from a hell gate conjured from a European heavy metal album! When I was younger and horror movie obsessed, I would watch 1987's The Gate on cable without realizing how absurd a notion it was that rock and roll brought forth pint-sized demons from hell.
The original bare-bones DVD from 2003 has long been out of print, and now Lionsgate has brought it back with a modest special edition. A commentary with director Tibor Takács is the main course, and interviews with cast and crew, still gallery, and original theatrical trailer make up the rest of this nostalgic platter. A 3D remake of The Gate is now underway from director Alex Winter (director of Freaked and Bill from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) and is slated to be released in 2010. Here's your chance to familiarize yourself with the original and hope that My Chemical Romance is the band that summons demons in the remake! (www.lionsgate.com)
