The Illegitimates (Issue 1)

Dec 17, 2013 Issue #48 - November/December 2013 - HAIM Bookmark and Share

From creator/writer Taran Killam (of Saturday Night Live fame), co-writer and comics vet Marc Andreyko, and artist Kevin Sharpe, this high-concept comic is off to a promising and amusing start. Imagine a ladies’ man of a super-spy (pretty much James Bond) sleeping his way through the world’s beautiful femme fatales in the course of his adventures over decades. When he finally buys the farm, his agency’s backup plan is to gather five of his illegitimate children into an elite espionage force.

This first issue (of six) is almost entirely setting up the premise, but features crisp visuals, good humor, and clear storytelling. Really, there’s nothing complex or overly ambitious going on here, which serves the book well. A fun bit of chewing gum that tastes great out of the pack; we’ll see if the flavor can last through issue 6. (www.idwpublishing.com)
