The totally underrated Severin Films' timely Blu-ray reissue of Enzo G. Castellari's 1978 Euro War film (think: spaghetti western with tanks) The Inglorious Bastards is a definite must-see for fans of Quentin Tarantino's latest opus. Various versions of the movie, starring Bo Svenson, Fred Williamson, and Ian Bannen, have seen release on VHS and DVD with titles such as Hell's Heroes, Counterfeit Commandos, Deadly Mission, and G.I. Bro (heavily re-cut to focus on Williamson). Severin makes all the right moves by cleaning up the best available print for the new format and including a bunch of special features highlighted by an interesting, sometimes hilarious, conversation between the director and Tarantino.
The Inglourious Basterds bares little to no resemblance to Castellari's original. The film, heavily influenced by The Dirty Dozen and Cross of Iron, is a cut above the average European exploitation movie of the time in terms of stunts, model work, and special effects. Sure, it leans a little too hard on the violent slow motion shots accompanied only by score and there is a scene that features topless German women firing machine guns, but if those are areas of interest for you then grab a copy.
