The Jerk [40th Anniversary Edition]

Studio: Shout Select

Mar 13, 2019 Issue #65 - Mitski and boygenius Bookmark and Share

The classic story of “a poor, black child” (Steve Martin) who leaves home, lands the girl of his dreams (Bernadette Peters), and makes it big, only to lose it all and be reminded again of what’s truly important in life.

One of the all-time great (and most quotable) film comedies, The Jerk finally receives a special edition worthy of its stature just in time for its 40th anniversary. The most exciting inclusion here is a sit-down conversation between Martin and director Carl Reiner, two longtime friends and comedy legends humbly discussing the origins of what is easily among the most enduring achievements for both. (The Jerk marked when Martin the stand-up superstar become Martin, the bankable film lead—which was, interestingly, not among the easiest of transitions, as they detail here.) Also included is a separate conversation between the film’s co-writers, including Carl Gottlieb, who (unbelievably) also wrote Jaws. Although it begs for a Martin-starring short film that prefaced it to have been tacked on to the disc—both interviews mention it numerous times—it’s far and away the best-ever release of one of the funniest movies ever made, and a no-brainer for comedy fans.
