Kevin Smith. Hockey enthusiast, filmmaker, porn-loving, and father are a few words and phrases that describe him, but "funny" would be what I'd put up top. This is the first box set of Smith's films and it contains three of his best films and extras that showcase his particular comic genius. While Smith's latest run of films have been mediocre to bad, Smodcast, his hilarious almost-weekly podcast with producer/friend Scott Mosier, is one of only a few podcasts that I subscribe to and eagerly await. That, in addition to his frequent standup shows (three compilations of which are on DVD) are where the man truly shines.
Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back are included in this new set. It's odd that these films are on Blu-ray, since Clerks was shot in 16 mm and Chasing Amy was shot in Super 16. Regardless, they're here, and they still provide laughs in all the right places. Smith has been hoarding some additional content for such an occasion, and so you'll see a long unreleased making-of Smith's unabashed Hollywood comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back entitled "Oh, What a Lovely Tea Party." Chasing Amy gets a new conversation between Smith and co-star/ex-girlfriend Joey Lauren Adams, new audio commentary with Smith and Mosier, and a "Tracing Amy" doc. The discs also contain all previously released content from prior DVDs/laserdiscs. Yes, I said laserdisc. So, here's your chance to revisit "37 dicks!?!" and "fingercuffs" like it was yesterday and hold out hope that Smith's upcoming A Couple of Dicks starring Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan lives up to its title.
