The Kitchen is a great reminder of the perfect malleability of the comic medium. While it always feels over-saturated by superheroes and science fiction, it’s great to see a good idea make its way into print without relying on capes and tights. The Kitchen follows a group of Hell’s Kitchen housewives whose gangster husbands were locked up in prison, leaving them to take over the family business.

The Kitchen is a retro-gritty take on the New York in the ‘70s, reminiscent of the hopeless desperation that plagued the city during that decade. The main characters, Kath, Raven, and Angie, have to make difficult decisions early on to survive the brutality of their environment. Ming Doyle’s art is heavy on shadows and contrast, perfect for the dimly lit alleyways where the most dramatic action takes place. It’s a twisted feminist take on classic crime comics, with a heavy dose of realism. (www.vertigocomics.com)
