The Mindy Project is a realistic and natural single girl show without trying too hard. Writer/producer/best-selling author Mindy Kaling (The Office) co-created the show with Howard Klein (Parks and Recreation) and wrote the pilot. She also plays the title role, a romantic comedy-obsessed OB/GYN looking for love. Although she is a very capable physician, Mindy is endearingly idiotic in her personal life. Left by her oral surgeon boyfriend, she keeps returning to hot stuff no-future guy with an accent (Jeremy, played by Ed Weeks), while good guy masquerading as bad boy (Danny, played by Chris Messina) slowly gets closer to herand gives her excellent boy advice, all girls take note.

“My body mass index is not great,” Mindy admits to her ice-blond, very together best friend Gwen (Anna Camp). That’s one of the winning qualities of this program, Mindy is not a size 0, not even close, and she spends a lot of time talking about what she is eating, or more often, not eating, just like a real girl. “We know three dateable guys and I can’t squander them on a high-risk situation like this,” Gwen tells Mindy as she gives her the pitying up-down. “Siri I’m changing my life today,” Mindy declares to her iPhone, to which Siri replies, “I’m sorry, I don’t understand.” Classic. Mindy walks a tenuous line that could any minute drop into psycho-chick, but doesn’t. You can’t help rooting for this awesome, if neurotic, gal. Whitney take note, this is how it’s done.
