The National
Over the last decade, Chicago’s Lollapalooza has morphed from what was originally a touring festival, into the sprawling four-day destination in Grant Park. As its borders extend to include editions around the world, such as Germany, Chile, and Paris, one stage has drawn the most sought after artists, even though it holds just over 1,000 people: Metro Chicago.
Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, those are the type of acts that have become expected for Metro’s Lollapalooza aftershows. The premiere of super group Them Crooked Vultures, a Chance the Rapper surprise set - these are not unusual, with the top names at the festival holding court on Clark St. This year is no different, with the storied venue hosting three headliners in Jack White, Vampire Weekend, and Thursday night’s intimate The National show. (Not to mention sets by Quinn XCII, Houndmouth and Chvrches.)
While on past stops in the Second City, Matt Berninger’s band of brothers has had to schedule multiple nights at the Civic Opera House, or even a 4-night stint at The Chicago Theatre. So naturally last night their devoted fan base was lined up for the entire day and once again packed in for the special set.
