Jesse Reklaw’s Slow Wave takes readers’ submitted dreams and turns them into four-panel comic strips. Dark Horse collects most of his strips from 1999–2003 in The Night of Your Life, a sturdy, hardbound volume. Reklaw brings to life the candy-selling, beach-vacationing robots in Joe Swineheart’s “The Robots Next Door,” Glenn Grube’s cat slam-dunking its own decapitated head, and Bracken MacLeod’s swordfight with Mormon ninjas under a rickety rollercoaster. Although he is not actually writing anything, Reklaw takes these nebulous, absurd stories and crafts succinct and detailed renderings of our nocturnal thoughts. Really, it’s the perfect medium for relating a dream. A single comic panel can tell so much of the story and the sharp, bordered transitions from frame to frame represent the sloppy editing of a dream. And most of the source material is golden. Where else but in a dream can you marry Mister Rogers and get to wear all of his sweaters?
