It’s near-impossible to talk about the plot of The One I Love in any level of detail; it may be the year’s most easy-to-spoil film. The movie is a series of unexpected twists, and without giving any way: Ethan and Sophie’s marriage is on the rocks, so their counselor sends to them on a country cottage retreat. When they get there—well, things happen. Saying much more that would ruin the experience.
We know those minimal plot details give little to sell readers on, but trust us that you’ll be happier going into this one in the dark. The One I Love is a romantic comedy with a sharp, sci-fi bent; it manages to be both funny and cerebral. The film gives off such a strong Twilight Zone vibe that by the film’s end you half-expect Rod Serling step around a corner, light a cigarette, and recap the moral of the story.
The debut feature from filmmaker Charlie McDowell (best known to this point as the author of the humorous Twitter account “Dear Girls Above Me”) shares a clear aesthetic with the semi-improvised films of producer Mark Duplass, who also stars as Ethan. Both director and stars (including Elisabeth Moss, in a particularly demanding role) do a great job navigating writer Justin Lader’s ingenious script without losing the story or their audience. The conclusion to their tale might feel less-hashed than everything that leads into it, but the journey there could hardly be more clever and enjoyable.
