Five middle-aged friends reunite in their quiet British hometown to conquer the “Golden Mile:” a notorious, 12-pint bar crawl that barely bested them over 20 years earlier. Led by delusional alcoholic Gary King (Simon Pegg) and teetotaling lawyer Andy Knightley (Nick Frost), this boozing brotherhood retraces their steps through pub after pub and pint after pint until they realize there’s more to the sleepy townsfolk than it appears; they soon find the fate of the human race resting in their drunken hands.

The third and final film in director Edgar Wright’s “Three Flavours Cornetto” trilogy—which began with Shaun of the Dead and continued with Hot Fuzz—doesn’t quite live up to the earlier films. The emphasis here lies heavily on action, but the fight scenes aren’t as entertaining as those in Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World; Pegg smashing an alien’s head is funny the first few times, not as much the second dozen. While it also suffers from a slow start and stretched premise, the charm of its stars getting wasted and debunking an intergalactic conspiracy goes a long way. If you enjoyed its predecessors, you’ll have fun with this one-even if it doesn’t match their magic.
