Sonny Smith has been kicking around the Bay Area music scene for over a decade, playing blues piano here, touring with Neko Case there, and releasing a string of solo records during the early '00s. In 2007, The Sunsets fell together and included a rotating group of friends, currently Kelley Stoltz, Tahlia Harbour (Citay, The Dry Spells), and Ryan Browne. Originally released on vinyl in the fall of 2009 by Soft Abuse and Secret Seven, Fat Possum is now giving the album a wider distribution on CD. Sonny's debut album with The Sunsets appeals to the heart with charming and straightforward, confessional pop songs in the realm of Jonathan Richman and '50s doo-wop R&B. "Death Cream" is a languid jam where Sonny travels around town rubbing cream on his friends and himself. With its wandering piano line and dawdling pace, it is the perfect song for a hot day and a dozen beers. (www.sonnysmith.com)
