The second of two very sold out shows at New York City’s Beacon Theater showed just why Tori Amos has been hailed as one of the world’s best live performers for two decades. A rare classically trained musician who crossed over into mainstream and critical success, Amos is known for an expansive catalogue that informs each night’s performance as the setlist changes depending on the city, Amos’s mood, or world events (between her two NYC shows, only three songs were repeated). She graced the stage just before 9 p.m. on a tour helping promote Unrepentant Geraldines, her most recent collection of all new material that recently landed her once again in Billboard’s Top 10.
As with most Amos shows, the venue was packed with enthusiastic fans, many of whom waited for hours the day before to request songs. She recognized that when she addressed the audience, noting that the show was “mostly requests,” and that there were some surprises in store for those who waited patiently. Many are calling the album and tour a return to form and roots: Amos is on this 80-gig tour alone for the first time in a decade, her small frame filling every crevice in the ornate and historic venues she plays night after night. Alone at the piano is where fans fell in love with her, and that’s part of the reason why this tour has been so widely regarded as a triumph.
She began the night with a series of back-catalogue tracks that included the Under the Pink favorite “Space Dog”; “Suede,” a brooding track from her experimental To Venus and Back album; and “Winter,” a favorite from her debut album Little Earthquakes. At each show on this tour there has been a section designated for covers. The “Lizard Lounge” is almost always a highlight, and Amos even acknowledged last night that it was her favorite part of the show. The first selection here was Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy,” a track Amos sampled earlier in her career during live performances of the Boys for Pele track “Father Lucifer.” The show’s true highlight came when she performed, for the first time in her career, Radiohead’s alt-rock classic “Creep.” She began quietly, with her lower register growling through lines like “I want a perfect body, I want a perfect soul.” When it came time to get to the song’s crushing finale, Amos raised her voice so powerfully that the entire audience stood up to give her a standing ovation. That’s just the power of a Tori show.
