What Does This Button Do?: An Autobiography

On the heels of a worldwide tour supporting 2016’s The Book of Souls, Bruce Dickinson, frontman of heavy metal behemoths Iron Maiden, throws his hat into the autobiography ring with What Does This Button Do?.
With a razor sharp wit and dry humor, Dickinson regales with tales of his more than 30-year history in one of metal’s biggest bands. But it’s clear in reading his autobiography that Dickinson is a man of more than one passion. Throughout the years his devotion to fencing and flying has been documented, and Dickinson spends a great deal of time here detailing these other pastimes. In fact, it often seems that Dickinson, perhaps rightly so, would rather discuss fencing foils and airplanes than he would his Maiden history. But no matter the topic, Dickinson is engaging and personable, and his autobiography sheds light on the person that Dickinson truly is. Maybe most interesting is the book’s final act, where Dickinson details his fight against tongue cancer, standing up to the beast and besting it with the same grit and determination he has shown in his musical career.
If you strictly want to geek out at Maiden minutiae, What Does This Button Do? Might not be for you. But if you’re in the market for a well-rounded portrait of a thoughtful, interesting man who also happens to be a metal god, dig in. (www.harpercollins.com)
