The Raconteurs:
Steady, As They Go

In which Jack White, Brendan Benson, Patrick Keeler, and Jack Lawrence (the later two of The Greenhorns) form a new band, not a side-project or a supergroup. In one of their first interviews as The Raconteurs, writer Matt Fink talked to all four members of the band about their debut album, Broken Boy Soldiers, and the challenges of avoiding the ‘vanity project’ tag. Photographer Autumn de Wilde visited the band in Nashville and conducted a brand new and exclusive photo-shoot with them for Under the Radar. “I’m just one piece in this band, one piece of the puzzle…It’s not ‘Jack White and The Raconteurs.’” – Jack White

Main Features:

Richard Ashcroft: Paradise Lost:

In an in-depth 7-page Q&A interview conducted by Senior Editor Mark Redfern, the former frontman of The Verve discusses his ‘comeback’, his third solo album (Keys To The World), religion, fatherhood, marriage, Verve box-sets, and his take on the state of the world. The article features exclusive photos taken in London by Andy Willsher. “There’s no part of Earth that’s untainted now, and paradise is now just a part of a dream in your mind. It’ll just be a computer program soon.” – Richard Ashcroft

The Concretes: Writer Frank Valish spoke to the Swedish band about recording their second album, In Colour, with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley). Valish spoke to band members Victoria Bergsman, Lisa Milberg, and Per Nystrom, as well as to producer Mogis. The article features an exclusive stylish new photo-shoot with the band, conducted in New York by Crackerfarm. “For all the voice and backing vocals, we all went and had singing lessons. I actually just had one because I found it quite freaky. They made you do very strange noises and I’m not really comfortable with that. Like wanting other people to sound like an animal or really scream at the top of my lungs. And I found that very awkward. It was like improv theater, which is my worst thing in the world.” – Lisa Milberg

The Flaming Lips: The Lucky Warriors: Writer Matt Fink spoke to Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd about The Flaming Lips’ new album, At War With the Mystics. “I have to admit, we’ve mostly been influenced by playing Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’ in our live set.” – Wayne Coyne

Grandaddy: When Our Grandaddy Retires: Writer Matt Fink spoke to Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle about his decision to break-up the band and the band’s final album, Just Like the Fambly Cat. The article features humorous photos by Wendy Lynch of Lytle playing bingo with the grey-haired regulars at a senior center. “We used to joke about how we were on the verge of greatness, but that was our permanent tag, either applied to us out of kindness or graciousness. But when we turned around it was nudge-nudge, ‘They’re not going to make it, but you have to feel sorry for them.” – Jason Lytle

Kris Kristofferson: On the Road Again: Writer Matt Fink spoke to the singer-songwriter legend, who turns 70 this year, about his latest album, This Old Road – an album that is not afraid to be critical of the current political climate. “A long time ago, I became resigned that I’ll be saying things that piss people off. And I don’t want to change.” – Kris Kristofferson

The Streets: Surviving Success: Writer Matt Fink spoke to The Streets, aka: Mike Skinner, about his third album (The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living), his gambling problem, the passing of his father, his run in with the British tabloids, and his thoughts on America. Features exclusive new photos of Skinner taken in London by Derrick Santini. “I don’t think I’m a very good role model. Maybe I am a role model, from the point of view that I’m making more mistakes than you could.” – Mike Skinner

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Writer August Brown spoke to Karen O about Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ second album Show Your Bones. “I feel a massive amount of responsibility; this has become more of a job to me than my art.” – Karen O
