Issue 5 Features

Cover Story: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Three-piece Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have just dropped their highly anticipated sophomore record, Take Them On, On Your Own. In our cover story they tell us about that album, their fear of dentists, they say “fuck ‘em all” to the US government, and we tell you how the band almost got shot while we interviewed them.

Special Sections

The Producers: We give you a view inside the control rooms of some of the most exciting record producers working today, including interviews with legends Tony Visconti (Bowie, Sparks, T-Rex) and John Leckie (The Stone Roses, The Verve, Radiohead). Also interviewed in the section are Saddle Creek’s resident producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, The Faint), Death Cab for Cutie’s guitarist Chris Walla (who’s also produced The Velvet Teen and Hot Hot Heat), Dave Fridmann (of Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips fame), Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, The Delgados), Mark Van Hoen (Mojave 3, Sing-Sing), Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur) and Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie (who has also produced Lush and his other band Violet Indiana).

Brighton Rock: We sent a writer and photographer to Brighton, a British sea-side town about one hour south of London, to chronicle three exciting new bands from there: Clearlake, Electrelane and the fittingly named British Sea Power.

Other Big Features

Spiritualized: Jason Pierce fills us in on the band’s new album, Amazing Grace, and why he’s misunderstood by the press.

Belle & Sebastian: We go surfing with the Scottish twee popsters and their label mates The Tyde, and Stuart Murdoch fills us in on the new upbeat Trevor Horn produced album, Dear Catastrophe Waitress.

Death Cab for Cutie: Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla open up about Death Cab’s new long-player, Tranatlanticism, and balancing Death Cab with The Postal Service, Gibbard’s successful side-project.

Super Furry Animals: We spoke to Gruff Rhys and Guto Pryce of these highly inventive Welsh rockers about Phanton Power, Pootie Tang and fishskin chips.

The Dandy Warhols: Courtney Taylor-Taylor confesses his love for Hanson’s drummer.

Grandaddy: Grandaddy on opening for Pete Yorn, clashing with security, broken shoulders and their disdain for socks.

Stereolab: Laetitia Sadier, Andy Ramsay and Simon Johns on their three separate side-projects (Monade, Europa 51 and Imitation Electric Piano), the tragic passing of bandmate Mary Hansen, and the future of Stereolab.

Broadcast: Broadcast on out of body experiences and an encounter with Phil Spector.

Britta Phillips & Dean Wareham: The Luna duo talk up their Tony Visconti produced side-project and Dean’s first leading man role in the indie-film Piggie.

The Air Guitar Championships: Our intrepid reporters and photographer could hardly contain their laughter as they checked out the US Air Guitar Championships in Los Angeles.
