Ariel Pink can talk a blue streak. He’s gregarious and garrulous, gamely willing to discuss just about anything, belying his self-deprecatingly admitted petulant tendencies. But these feel like gross exaggerations while in the throes of a discussion with a man who has grown by leaps and bounds artistically without compromising his integrity, a difficult feat for any musician. Moving Sideways: A Conversation Between Ariel Pink and Neil Halstead
Sep 15, 2017
By John Everhart (Intro and Moderation)
A conversation between Ariel Pink (full name Ariel Marcus Rosenberg) and Neil Halstead, vocalist/guitarist of Slowdive, is seemingly incongruous at first blush, considering their vastly different methodologies. Ariel Pink has released music at a rapid pace, in a cut-up manner, evolving from his early 4-track days onto newer adventures in hi-fi such as 2014’s terrific Pom pom. More

Now that Ween has officially (finally?) ceded the throne of comedy rock, maybe it’s time we give Ariel Marcus Rosenberg, better known as Ariel Pink, his rightful crown. Back in the early aughts, with the brothers Ween already selling out huge shows, Ariel Pink was crafting the lo-est of lo-fi pop experiments, each of them revealing both an encyclopedic knowledge of music and songcraft-with a particular fetish for ‘70s and’80s radio hits-and an off-kilter sense of humor on par with that of Ween, Zappa, et al, or his own oft-cited influence, R. Stevie Moore. More

Day one of Coachella 2011 displayed several improvements over last year. There was less of a crowd (even though it was sold out this year, they put more of a limitation on how many tickets could be sold). Security was tighter and parking seemed less of a pain. And it even seemed as though the Mojave and Gobi tents were a little bigger this year and able to accommodate more fans. Highlights of the day included two bands from down under and some soft rockers; where-as two notable artists stormed off the stage. More

Following numerous complaints of last year’s festival being far too crowded, this year Goldenvoice the organizers of Coachella 2011 made significant changes to address that concern. A wristband with a microchip is now necessary at all time during the festival, scanned at no fewer than two checkpoints on the way into the festival. Additionally, they also sold less tickets than last year. The result of both thus far (it might just be that many attendees couldn’t get Friday off from work) is a greatly improved experience. Even during headliner Kings of Leon there was plenty of room to maneuver and find a decent spot to watch the show. So in that respect, it’s already a great improvement on last year. This year’s music started off with an impressive array of talent, but had little in the way of jaw-dropping moments the festival has become famous for. More

A notoriously rudimentary, inchoate home recorder, Ariel Pink has crafted some great pop songs over the course of a litany of obscure album releases. Sadly, they’ve largely been gems obfuscated in grime, their lo-fidelity a disservice to the brilliant melodic instincts at their core. More
