Last week’s Songs of the Week was sparse, with only a Top 8 (and two of those songs were from the same artist), probably due to it building up a three-day weekend. There wasn’t much to write about at the start of this week, due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, but labels, bands, and publicists more than made up for it with plenty of new songs the rest of the week. But the cancer returned and spread to his liver and in September he cancelled tour dates again due to his illness. More

Last night Charles Bradley stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The former James Brown impersonator has become a modern soul icon in his own right, even if it’s later in his life that he’s found success. Last night he performed “Ain’t It a Sin,” a track from his recently released third album, Changes, which is out now on Daptone and Dunham. More

As posthumous records go, there is nothing quite like Charles Bradley’s Black Velvet. The soul singer, who passed away in September 2017, had made a name for himself late in life: first, in his early years, with a career as a James Brown cover artist (where he performed as the eponymous “Black Velvet”); and later, with his discovery by Daptone Records and the release of his debut album, No Time for Dreaming, at the age of 62. The story of Charles Bradley is a quintessentially American one. As chronicled in the excellent documentary Soul of America, he was down on his luck until he was discovered as a James Brown impersonator, becoming the unlikeliest of stars at age 65. Bradley is now on his third album, Changes, and is backed by The Extraordinaires, who replace The Menahan Street Band. More

Øya, day four. The best way to avoid jet lag is to never sleep—but by this point I was experiencing a new sensation: festival lag. On the way to the day’s events, I passed a man in the hotel lobby, sleeping soundly in a small nest of beanbag chairs. He is my spirit animal. More
