SXSW starts with a hug. And—if you’re very lucky—a kiss. Sure it’s a music conference, a place where new bands head to earn their buzz, established bands visit to hock their wares, and everyone goes to practice the age-old art of FOMO. But before all that “work,” friends, co-workers, band members, and publicists start it all off with a squeeze. We may whine about the long hours, the endless schedules, and all forms of “work” (again with the quotation marks) but don’t let our kvetching fool you—this is summer camp for the music industry. Dan Deacon doesn’t do things by halves. The Baltimore-based electro producer has spent a career throwing himself into grey-matter clattering sonic spectrums that sound like they’ve been rewired by some madcap genius inventor. A half-assed Dan Deacon record simply doesn’t exist. Neither does a dull one. More

Being at a Dan Deacon concert is like being at a kid’s birthday party made for adults. Only instead of a clown making balloon animals, the crowd is treated to a bearded man with oversized glasses screaming voice modulated squeals into a microphone while shaking his hand in front of him like he’s flicking water into someone’s face. Fans of Dan Deacon’s minimalism-gone-maximum electronic music were possibly puzzled when he stated that his latest opus would be his “protest album.” The guy that once titled his songs “Woody Woodpecker” or “Lion With a Shark’s Head” isn’t generally too keen on remonstration. America‘s existence is not without precedence, though. More
