Gloriously Misunderstood: The Full Interview
Aug 30, 2012
By Laura Studarus
Alex Ebert is not a hippie. The Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros frontman peppers his statements with joyful affirmations, and certainly dresses the part, but he assures that he isn’t interested in making music exclusively for the free spirit set. “If we were all in suits with short haircuts, I really don’t think anyone would see the music as hippie!” he says with an easy going laugh. “The music itself, you listen to it on its own, and it’s more R&B country.” More

Once upon a time, artists were reliant upon reinvention as their careers progressed; this model was perfected by pioneers like David Bowie and Paul Simon, who somehow managed to traverse myriad musical contexts while maintaining a thread of consistency throughout. It’s a remarkable balancing act, and a necessary one if longevity is part of an artist’s plans. More

It’s been three years since Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros carved out an interesting creative niche with their 2009 debut album, Up From Below. In the ‘60s, three years could mean everything to a folk-oriented act, though the lofty pursuits of artists like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs are leagues away from those of The Magnetic Zeros. More

Day two of Coachella 2010 alas offered few highlights. This year Coachella has put way too many great artists on Sunday’s bill, which will inevitably lead to a lot of Sophie’s Choice-like moments of picking between which favorite artists to see. Whereas Saturday’s bill suffered from a lack of must see artists, there was no shortage of artists worth checking out, it’s just that few of them delivered. Matters were not helped by the fact that the best set I saw was also the first set I saw. Almost everything underwhelmed after that. More

Muse drew one of the biggest crowds of the Coachella Festival to their explosive Saturday-night set. The band’s recent slew of arena shows around the U.S. and the Coachella crowd’s rapturous reaction indicate that the English trio are finally on their way to becoming as big Stateside as they are in the U.K. More

Day two started out much like day one, in fulltilt. Despite a bevy of physical ailments left over from yesterday’s marathon, making it to Camera Obscura’s set on time was worth another painful sprint across the field. However day two was light on the heavy hitters, and after the initial close call, I didn’t have to hustle to see sets from Beach House, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Hot Chip, MGMT, and Muse.
