Despite getting into a physical altercation with my alarm clock on the last day of SXSW (Final score, me: 0, alarm clock: 1), I still summoned the fortitude to see a few more bands. Thankfully, Saturday a historically light day when it comes to showcases, and in between sets we found time to engage in a few extra-curricular activities. Chiefly, that meant enjoying the perfect storm of SXSW attendees, college students on spring break, St. Patrick’s Day pub-crawlers, and locals out for a weekend, as they came together in an awkward cloud of music, booze, and terrible green clothing.

Because five straight days of nonstop music, packed subways, and free booze just isn’t enough, the Syndicate and Rachael Ray’s The Feedback started their CMJ celebration a night early with sets from the Union Line, The Cringe, White Denim, and Fanfarlo, at the 11th annual Conflict of Interest party at Rebel NYC in Manhattan. On “I’m A Pilot,” the opening track from Fanfarlo’s glorious debut LP Reservoir (Atlantic), frontman Simon Balthazar croons, “If I stay in this room, they’ll remember me for my youth.” The waltz as a whole is about the famed aviator Howard Hughes, who slowly went insane and shut himself in a film-screening room for four months, then disappeared from the public eye. But taken slightly out of context, “I’m A Pilot” very much defines the London-based orchestral pop outfit, who graciously and effortlessly charmed the crowd at a packed Bowery Ballroom on Sept. 21.
