Another Dark Year Was Brightened By a Plethora of Fantastic Albums
Dec 30, 2017
By Mark Redfern
2016 was regarded as a fairly rough year by many, but 2017 was no walk in the park either. 2016 was mired by the deaths of several beloved musical icons (David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, and Sharon Jones among them) and the disappointing and divisive Presidential election, but in 2017 we had to deal with the ramifications of said election (we’d say that roughly 95% of the musicians we interview likely don’t support many, if any, of President Trump’s policies). Sexual Misconduct Does Not Begin and End with Harvey Weinstein
Oct 20, 2017
By Stephen Mayne
As the Harvey Weinstein fallout continues to unfold, it’s a reminder that the crimes he stands accused of are not exactly rare, nor are they confined to the world of tarnished Hollywood glitz. Like every other part of society, the music industry is also riddled with similar stories. We look at that this week, alongside President Trump insulting various people and imperiling the safety of the world. Not that he doesn’t do the same thing most weeks. More

In the past we’ve avoided posting midyear best albums lists. It seemed somehow impatient and premature to evaluate the year’s albums halfway through. And how do you decide which period the list covers, which arbitrary release date do you work out is the cut off point, as every midyear list seems to cover a different period? But 2017 is a year that demands a partial evaluation. More

There’s a moment toward the end of Pure Comedy, Josh Tillman’s sprawling third album as Father John Misty, that feels just a little different from all of those that come before it. As all of the swirling strings and pianos drop out near the end of “The Memo,” digital voices arise and tangle around his. More

For Under the Radar’s 13th annual Artist Survey we emailed some of our favorite artists a few questions relating to 2015. We asked them about their favorite albums of the year and their thoughts on various notable 2015 news stories involving either the music industry or world events, as well as some quirkier personal questions. Here are some answers from Josh Tillman, who records as Father John Misty. Father John Misty’s excellent February 2015-released sophomore album, I Love You, Honeybear, was Under the Radar’s #1 album of 2015. More
"In some respect, I felt like I was majorly jumping the shark [with I Love You, Honeybear]. I've got two AK-47s and a hovercraft prototype, and I'm just flying over that fucking shark, guns a-blazin'."

It’s only three shows into his tour, and Josh Tillman is struggling. The songs from I Love You, Honeybear-his critically-acclaimed second release as Father John Misty-are proving to be “inhospitable environments,” and he can’t find the right way to inhabit them on stage every night. More

No one wants to hear this shit from me.” That’s what Josh Tillman says the more uncharitable voices in his head were telling him as he was working on I Love You, Honeybear, his second release as Father John Misty. More

Earlier this year, Josh Tillman dropped what—to many Fleet Foxes fans—felt like a bomb: he was leaving the band. A little more than a week later, Tillman announced his triumphant return to the music world, this time as a solo artist playfully dubbed Father John Misty. Under the Radar caught up with Tillman at his Laurel Canyon home to discuss the newest chapter in his musical career. More

There has been some online speculation that Josh Tillman might sunset his sage but wisecracking Father John Misty alter-ego after his sixth album, Mahashmashana, which takes its name from the Sanskrit word meaning “great cremation pit.” More

Before adopting his loveably irreverent alter ego Father John Misty, Josh Tillman was a bare bones folk doomer, a relatively unknown Fleet Foxes sideman writing dreary albums with morbid titles such as Cancer and Delirium and generally not having a very good time. As Father John Misty, he’s transformed into one of the most unique voices in modern music, balancing his personal bloodletting with acerbic wit and social observations both sharp and humorous, sometimes even downright funny. Back when he was plain old J. Tillman, the man who reinvented himself as Father John Misty churned out records at quite a pace. The production line slowed since he dropped the earnest folk shtick and turned into cynical, satirical jokester Father John Misty in 2012, but output is ratcheting up. More

After a number of solo albums as J. Tillman and a stint as Fleet Foxes’ drummer, Josh Tillman created Father John Misty to find his real voice. It seems to be paying off as he moves to the third album under his eccentric moniker, a musically quieter and lyrically more expansive follow-up to 2015’s I Love You, Honeybear. More

Only in this day and age could the most human album in a long time be produced by an alter-ego. Joshua Tillman’s second go-round as Father John Misty, I Love You, Honeybear, finds the character going through every cycle of life, from lust to love to fear to hopelessness to depression to loneliness, only interrupted by the occasional bout of happiness. The final day of a three-day music festival is usually a bitter-sweet affair. While there’s a part of you doesn’t want the incredible performances and time-out-of-time experience to end and real life to take over again, another part of you is utterly relieved not to have to trek for miles across muddy fields, eat overpriced festival food and stand in long lines for porta potties. Halfway through the show, Father John Misty (aka J. Tillman) looked to the back of the venue, where there’s a bar lined with mirrors. He gazed at his reflection, wondering out loud, “Who is that anorexic homeless person dancing around in his long underwear?” More

Father John Misty is Josh Tillman, former drummer for Fleet Foxes, and for the heightened level of likeminded approach to his previous band mates displayed here, Tillman could be pegged as a blood relative. More
