Under the Radar‘s Summer 2010 issue is a special issue we’re calling the Wasted on the Youth Issue. The basic idea of the issue was to talk to musicians and actors about various facets of their childhood/teenage years, from their first favorite bands/concerts to childhood memories to movies/TV shows of their youth, etc. We were interested in talking to musicians and actors about some of their earliest memories and their childhood passions. Many of the articles include childhood or teenage photos of the musicians interviewed. The Full Transcript of a Conversation Between Damian Abraham and Mark Mothersbaugh
Jul 28, 2010
By Matt Fink
Damian Abraham (aka Pink Eyes) doesn’t figure to be the type of person who gets starstruck easily, having earned his reputation with fearless and frenzied performances as the burly frontman of Toronto’s Fucked Up. But when speaking with Devo vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Mark Mothersbaugh, Abraham is all nervous energy, unleashing a cascade of words that tangle and circle back on themselves, and winding through explanations of his introduction to Devo through his dad’s record collection to the origins of the Pink Eyes moniker and the evolution of his prodigious beard. Eventually, he settles and gets around to actually asking Mothersbaugh some questions, revealing himself to be a pop music scholar with an encyclopedic knowledge of rock history and Devo’s place in it. With Devo’s Something for Everybody—their first new record in 20 years—taking them everywhere from The Colbert Report to Live with Regis and Kelly, Abraham offers a refresher course on why Devo still matters in this uncut transcription of their interview (a shorter version of which appears in our Summer 2010 issue). Fucked Up’s new record marks a departure from the hefty concept albums for which they’re most revered and adored. While 2011’s David Comes to Life and 2018’s Dose Your Dreams reveled in their magnitude, length, and epic scope, One Day is a brief, brilliant fireworks display of an album, written and largely recorded in the space of a single day. While Fucked Up may be referred to most often as a punk band, even a hardcore punk band, each of their last few albums poked a few holes in that envelope. Sure, Damian Abraham (Pink Eyes) provides the definition of in-the-red punk vocals on each and every song, but the band has explored a wide range of inventive approaches to their surrounding sonics. At this stage in the colorful career of Fucked Up, the truly logical thing to do was to release a double-length concept album. After a string of early collector-bait hardcore punk singles, 2006’s Hidden World presented the Canadian band as a steamrolling, arena-rock-meets-punk colossus. More
