For this Throwback Thursday we revisit our 2002 article on Interpol, our first interview with the band. It was in honor of their debut album, Turn On the Bright Lights. The article appeared in our third issue next to interviews with other hot New York City bands also releasing their debuts at the time, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Liars. Under the Radar Co-Publisher Wendy Lynch Redfern did a photo-shoot with the band at the Troubadour in Los Angeles during their sound-check. Two years later Interpol appeared on our cover for 2004’s sophomore album, Antics, and they graced the cover again for 2010’s self-titled fourth album. On September 9 the band releases their fifth album, El Pintor, their first to be recorded without founding member Carlos Dengler. Read on as guitarist Daniel Kessler explains why he’s filling in for Paul Banks, a recent band theft, the band’s beginnings, their songwriting process, and why there are 75 bands he likes better than Joy Division. If I had to name the new Interpol release myself, A Fine Mess might’ve been my pick without even knowing there was an included song of the same name. More

As I approached the House of Vans, my eyes were met with what had become a familiar neighborhood scene in Greenpoint, Brooklyn over the past eight years-hordes of young, fashionable New Yorkers assembled outside the doors of 25 Franklin Street in long queues that winded and wrapped around the block in serpentine like fashion. But tonight would be the last time. More

It’s been 16 years since Interpol turned the NYC music scene on its ear with their brooding and brilliant debut album Turn on the Bright Lights. Setting the bar very high very early can spell doom to some, but Interpol was able to parlay their early success into a meaningful career, mostly due to a unique ability to push their guitar-based rock in different directions while carving out an interesting and distinctive sound. Death to Interpol. Death to all neo-baritone-core. Death to The National. Death to Editors. If you really wanted to take a leaf out of Joy Division’s book, you all should’ve called it a day after two albums. It’s 2014, for God’s sake. More

Los Angelenos are accustomed to traffic, but not the foot kind. All the bread lines in communist Russia can’t compare to the queue clogging up the sidewalk perimeter of Exposition Park at the start of the 11th annual FYF Festival. (Keen observation by Real Estate bassist Alex Bleeker: “‘FYF festival’ is a little redundant isn’t it, like ‘ATM machine.’”) More

No matter how one feels about Interpol’s output in the 10 years since the release of their debut Turn on the Bright Lights, it’s still an astonishing record. Not many bands have come into the world with such clarity of vision that the music, design, attire, and persona all fit tightly into one package. More

Day one of Coachella 2011 displayed several improvements over last year. There was less of a crowd (even though it was sold out this year, they put more of a limitation on how many tickets could be sold). Security was tighter and parking seemed less of a pain. And it even seemed as though the Mojave and Gobi tents were a little bigger this year and able to accommodate more fans. Highlights of the day included two bands from down under and some soft rockers; where-as two notable artists stormed off the stage. More

Following numerous complaints of last year’s festival being far too crowded, this year Goldenvoice the organizers of Coachella 2011 made significant changes to address that concern. A wristband with a microchip is now necessary at all time during the festival, scanned at no fewer than two checkpoints on the way into the festival. Additionally, they also sold less tickets than last year. The result of both thus far (it might just be that many attendees couldn’t get Friday off from work) is a greatly improved experience. Even during headliner Kings of Leon there was plenty of room to maneuver and find a decent spot to watch the show. So in that respect, it’s already a great improvement on last year. This year’s music started off with an impressive array of talent, but had little in the way of jaw-dropping moments the festival has become famous for. More

As suggested by the simple title of their fourth album, Interpol pares down their sound, reducing the flourishes and touches that have crept into their music since their debut, 2002’s immaculate Turn on the Bright Lights. More
