Interviews

Jun 11, 2021

Often, when listening to the dense, lush, lively music of Australian band, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, the idea of people dancing mesmerized around a fire comes to mind. The group has a vast, at times cultish following that is borne from the band’s at times labyrinth-like songs. If a record was a menu, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s music would offer a cornucopia feast. More

Reviews

Aug 09, 2024

It’s become critic cliché to point out the prolific output of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The Aussie sextet is on their 26th studio album since self-releasing their debut record, 12 Bar Bruise, in 2012, and eighth since the start of 2022. More

Apr 28, 2022

For two years, Australia’s most relentless rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard couldn’t record together. The pandemic essentially shutdown Melbourne, the band’s base of operations, not allowing the members to engage in the group recording sessions that spawned one of the most eclectic discographies in modern music, littered with genre hopping and fantastical silliness. Of course, that didn’t stop them from recording their parts remotely and releasing three albums during lockdown, followed by a vinyl only release earlier this year. Nice try god, but even pestilence can stop them. Maybe try famine next time? More

Apr 30, 2019

After a year-long “hiatus,” King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard are back and stronger than ever, with their fourteenth album in half as many years. Immediately different from their past material (known to genre-bend from metal to jazz, often within one song), Fishing for Fishies strikes a balance between garage-blues “boogie” and remarkably deep lyrical content. Here’s a quick recap: since 2012, Australian psych-punk gang King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have released nine albums. One was a spoken-word Western concept album. One featured four long tracks of deliberately equal length. More

Nov 13, 2015

One of the most interesting aspects of Melbourne, Australia’s King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is how a seven-piece ensemble manages to produce such winning sounds by effortlessly employing restraint rather than overkill. And with Paper Mâché Dream Balloon being their seventh album (along with a couple of EPs) in less than five years, they have things down to a psych-pop/rock science. More
