Day two of SXSW was a bit challenging, considering the lack of sleep we’d gotten the night before. Seeing a show at 1 a.m. is all well and good if you don’t have to wake up early the next morning to write about it or conduct other business. We weren’t able to attend any day parties on the second day of SXSW music 2010, due to two photo-shoots we were conducting, including one at the way too early hour of 10 a.m. (well, early for SXSW). But that night we were able to catch sets from two Canadian bands (including one collective who’s seemingly no longer broken), some Los Angeles natives, and a camera shy actress/singer. More

My all-time favorite movie is a bat-shit sci-fi film called The Fifth Element. It’s one of the most creative, fun, insane movies ever made, and I can’t believe this was only Luc Besson’s second English language film (he went from Léon: The Professional to this). More

To end out the week, we ask Kelcey Ayer some questions about endings and death. Ayer is Local Natives’ vocalist, pianist, and one of the band’s primary songwriters, but in September he released his debut solo album as Jaws of Love. (the period at the end of the name is intentional). More

“We had gone through quite a bit of darkness.” That’s how Local Natives guitarist Taylor Rice describes the writing of the band’s 2013 album Hummingbird. The mood was largely dour, as the band members were going through difficult times in their lives, resulting in what Rice calls a “very cathartic record.” More

I can remember the first time I played Super Street Fighter II. It must have been 1993, I was seven years old and we were living in Mission Viejo, California. More

Former Under the Radar “Pleased to Meet You” artists Local Natives have been busy. No longer Los Angeles’ little secret, since the release of harmony-filled debut album Gorilla Manor, the quintet has been constantly touring, both at home and abroad. Under the Radar caught up with Local Natives at Coachella for a laugh-filled chat about learning on the road, life after day jobs…and Kathy Bates. More

Under the Radar‘s Best of the Decade/Year-End Issue features our Best of the Decade Artist Survey. For Under the Radar’s 7th annual Artist Survey we emailed some of our favorite artists a few questions relating to the last decade and asked them for a list of their best albums of the decade. Some of the surveys didn’t make it in the issue and some answers from surveys that did make it in the issue had to be trimmed for space. Those surveys and answers are posted on our website. Here is a web-exclusive survey from Andy Hamm of Local Natives.

Los Angeles gets a bad reputation from so many people who judge it from their position outside the snowglobe of the city, people whose experience of it is often fleeting and transient. Endless movies and songs have been written about it, tales of disappointment or elegies for dreams deferred. More

We all knew it was coming, right? The so-called “difficult” second album. This is especially expected from a band such as Local Natives—who named their debut album Gorilla Manor after the frat house-like living conditions they shared during the recording process. Time to grow up. 401ks are waiting. More

It’s a curious thing to watch a band grow up. Last August, Local Natives reached a new career high with a month long residency at Spaceland—a 290 capacity club tucked deep in the heart of Los Angeles’ Silver Lake district. Fast-forward a year and they’ve sold out two nights at the Henry Fonda Theater, a venue roughly six times the size. After months of near-constant touring, it was a fit homecoming, and a promising send-off to their fall tour. More

Day three of Coachella 2010 more than made up for a lackluster day two, with set after set of strong artists and ending with perhaps the three best performances of the whole festival, all in a row: Pavement, Thom Yorke, and Gorillaz. It would have been nice if the wealth of great artists had been spread out a little bit more over the three days, but then again, Sunday wouldn’t have been so strong if they had scheduled it that way. Here’s what I saw on the last day of Coachella: Local Natives, Owen Pallett, Mayer Hawthorne, Deerhunter, Florence and the Machine, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jonsi, Spoon, Phoenix, Pavement, Thom Yorke, and Gorillaz.
