For all its futuristic, neon moodiness the music video for the new Muse track “Madness,” (featured on the band’s upcoming record The 2nd Law) is more or less a high-production retelling of the 2011 Vancouver riot. In case you don’t remember, game seven of the Stanley Cup didn’t end so well for the city fans, leading to a great deal of gas canisters and police shields. More

The official soundtrack for 2008’s Twilight wasn’t much to sniff about (kind of like the movie). Only a few scant cuts from blood letters Paramore and Linkin Park littered the tracklisting. Conversely, the marketing blitz for Twilight sequel New Moon has been nothing short of buzz-worthy and downright confusing. The final tracklisting was announced today on Myspace and writer Stephanie Meyer’s website and it’s just as ripe for hipsterdom’s cognitive dissonance as we surmised. More

Simulation theory, for anyone who hasn’t seen The Matrix, is a theory that argues reality is a complex simulation so realistic it convinces its inhabitant that it’s real. It is also exactly the sort of thing you would expect Muse to write an album about, as it allows them to indulge in camp sci-fi fantasy while keeping an air of intelligence. More

The sixth studio release by Brit rockers Muse is a classic case of art vs. science. The name of the album, The 2nd Law, in fact refers to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which theorizes that over time, the differences in temperature, pressure, and chemical potential of an equilibriated system can destroy the system itself. Could Muse be inferring something with the title? More

There’s a certain difficulty in writing a Muse review: trash them and you risk incurring the wrath of their fans for invoking those same tired (but still entirely pertinent) Queen references; praise them and you’ll be shot down by anyone who has ever sat through one of their records sober. The good news about new album The 2nd Law is that the band has expanded the pool of artists from whom they shamelessly steal ideas. More

Day two of Coachella 2010 alas offered few highlights. This year Coachella has put way too many great artists on Sunday’s bill, which will inevitably lead to a lot of Sophie’s Choice-like moments of picking between which favorite artists to see. Whereas Saturday’s bill suffered from a lack of must see artists, there was no shortage of artists worth checking out, it’s just that few of them delivered. Matters were not helped by the fact that the best set I saw was also the first set I saw. Almost everything underwhelmed after that. More

Muse drew one of the biggest crowds of the Coachella Festival to their explosive Saturday-night set. The band’s recent slew of arena shows around the U.S. and the Coachella crowd’s rapturous reaction indicate that the English trio are finally on their way to becoming as big Stateside as they are in the U.K. More

Day two started out much like day one, in fulltilt. Despite a bevy of physical ailments left over from yesterday’s marathon, making it to Camera Obscura’s set on time was worth another painful sprint across the field. However day two was light on the heavy hitters, and after the initial close call, I didn’t have to hustle to see sets from Beach House, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Hot Chip, MGMT, and Muse.
