Panda Bear on “Buoys”

Insight Outlook

May 01, 2019

If there is one continuous thread that ties together the diverse discography of Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox, also of Animal Collective), it is his unyielding insistence on pushing forward. More

May 07, 2015

To listen to Ariel Pink talk is to hear him think—that much becomes immediately clear a few minutes into his conversation with Noah Lennox (aka Panda Bear). Ask him a question and what follows is an avalanche of unfiltered thoughts, some seemingly brilliant, others highly questionable, and nearly all of them provocative to some extent. More

Reviews

Feb 04, 2019

What type of music has Noah Lennox not made? Between his discography with Animal Collective and a steady stream of solo work as Panda Bear, Lennox, the Lisbon, Portugal-via-Baltimore avant-gardist has covered and furthermore bolstered a patchwork of ambient, neo-psychedelia, experimental chamber-pop, and bedroom-pop, the latter not as much a formal genre but a phenomenon Lennox laboriously contributed to over the past two decades. The exclusivity of a vinyl-only release carries with it a certain temptation. It gives wax heads another reason to visit whatever record shop remains in their town on Saturday afternoon and it incentivises all others straddling the fence and tired of feeling left out to get a turntable and join in.

Aug 21, 2015

As if he hadn’t blessed us enough already with January’s beautiful Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper LP, Noah Lennox is back again already with a sweet little surprise Panda Bear EP of additional material. More

Jan 12, 2015

Noah Lennox is really good at making beautiful music, but you might be forgiven for forgetting this on occasion. Lennox’s band, Animal Collective, has spent much of its discography (Merriweather Post Pavilion a notable exception) hiding Lennox’s melodic gifts behind waves of atonal drone and challenging musicality-not necessarily a bad thing, in many instances, but it has the effect of making it a special thing to hear Lennox on his own with his Panda Bear project. More

Apr 15, 2011

While “You Can Count On Me,” the first song on Panda Bear’s Tomboy, is about having children and wanting to keep them safe (“Want to put a bubble ‘round you/Like a force field switch”), it could just as easily be read as a response to the pressure of following up Person Pitch. More
