Matthew Woodley discusses upcoming third album

Oct 30, 2009

Montréal trio Plants and Animals have spent the majority of the past year in a van, touring in support of their 2008 breakthrough album, Parc Avenue. Yet amidst bringing their particular brand of folk-rock to the masses, singer/guitarist Warren Spicer, guitarist/bassist Nicolas Basque, and drummer Matthew Woodley (aka, the Woodman, or Woody) have also devoted their attention to writing and recording what will be their third album. The album, title TBA, is due for an early 2010 release. As the band inches closer to the album’s completion, Woodley took some time to speak with Under the Radar, filling us in on the details. More

Plants and Animals

Collegiate Progressives

Apr 02, 2008

The three members of Montréal’s Plants and Animals might be Music Studies graduates, but theirs is not the sound of intellectual snobs. Graduating from Montréal’s Concordia University in the early part of the century with degrees in electro-acoustic music, Warren Spicer, Matthew Woodley, and Nicolas Basque have, with their sophomore album, Parc Avenue, hit upon a sound that is at once smooth, complex, and organic, with touches of ’70s rock and soul and an expansive musical palette that includes everything from flutes to violin and choirs of voice. Reviews

Jun 15, 2016

Plants and Animals return from a three-year hiatus with their fourth LP, Waltzed In From the Rumbling. Their absence has indeed been felt; records so steeped in lush organic sounds are increasingly rare these days, and the few that do make it to our eardrums are generally lacking in originality and quality. More

Feb 26, 2012

Over its last two albums, Montréal trio Plants and Animals grew from lush, folk-inspired songwriters to more experimental, rock ‘n’ roll animals. For as light, airy, and nuanced as 2008’s Parc Avenue was, 2010’s La La Land was in equal measure in your face and electrified. Plants and Animals’ latest album largely splits the difference between those two albums. More

Apr 21, 2010

Plants and Animals’ last album, 2008’s Parc Avenue, was one of the year’s best, a pastoral pastiche of ‘70s-flavored folk-rock grooves, aided by strings and horns, that set a genuine, organic mood of laidback cool. Since releasing the album, the Montréal trio has toured almost constantly, playing over 150 shows in the States and abroad. Perhaps as a result, the band’s new album possesses a distinctly more volatile, rougher-edged sound. More
