Under the guise of Porcelain Raft, Mauro Remiddi makes gauzy bedroom pop—constructing dream-laden choruses from loops of gently strummed guitars, drum machines, and tape hiss. Impressed with the several EPs he already has to his name (including last year’s excellent Gone Blind), Under the Radar spoke with the Italian troubadour on the eve of the release of his first full-length Strange Weekend (out via Secretly Canadian). Remiddi told us about simplifying the process, the marriage of image and sound, and what he really wanted to do with his life. More

Mauro Remiddi believes one of the key elements to his songwriting process is achieving a level of exhaustion. Writing, recording, and mixing a new song in a single day is a common occurrence for the 38-year-old, who regularly sequesters himself in his small London flat. Because he progresses from start to finish so quickly, Remiddi says his work often feels like “an afterthought, like finally you think of what actually happened. More

Mauro Remiddi returns with his second full-length after last year’s Strange Weekend. The title refers to a phone line that’s off the hook (remember hooks?) without a connection for a long time, a stand-in for Remiddi’s own inability to really connect with loved ones during a year on the road (what would second or third albums be without the rigors of the road?) In Fellini’s 81/2, the movie’s protagonist, tired of being stuck in traffic, leaves his body and floats over the cars and out toward the sea. Italian musician Mauro Remiddi (who writes and performs as Porcelain Raft) might sympathize. More

We were pretty sure that people would show up to our Thursday SXSW party because of our exclusive set by Atlas Sound, and while we were confident that we had an equally strong lineup for our Friday party (which was presented by Shure), we still weren’t certain how many fans would show up. But our immediate concern at the start of the party was whether our first artist would make it in time (if at all). Porcelain Raft (aka Italian born, London-based, Mauro Remiddi) had underestimated how far his hotel was from our venue (The Flamingo Cantina), was running late, and had a dead cell-phone and thus no way to let us know that he was indeed on his way. Thankfully the charming Remiddi arrived with a thousand apologies 10 minutes before he was scheduled to perform and because he’s a one-man band, was pretty much ready to go on time. The crowd, by the way, was as healthy in numbers as the day before, with a to-capacity venue and a line down the block most of the day. More
