The New Jersey quartet Real Estate (that’s Martin Courtney IV, Matthew Mondanile III, Etienne Pierre Duguay and Alex Bleeker) sure do love summer. “It’s gonna be hard to go back.” Martin Courtney laughs as he describes the line crossed by Real Estate in the writing and recording of their latest album, The Main Thing. For nearly a decade, the New Jersey-based band have developed their niche of relaxing rock, but an “existential crisis,” as Courtney has termed it, pushed the band toward a more thoughtful ethic concerning their craft this time around. Pensive, languid melodies are the name of the game on Real Estate‘s third LP, Atlas. The band largely jettisons the influences of its New Jersey brethren Yo La Tengo and The Feelies throughout this soft-hewn album, instead nodding heavily to ‘80s Brit cult icons Felt. Frontman Martin Courtney concurs. More

For a bunch of barely 30-year-olds, the members of Real Estate sure know how to make some stellar soft rock. That’s not meant as an insult—their last album, Atlas, is one of the best albums of the last several years, drenched in mid-tempo melodies and lyrics about returning to a home that doesn’t quite fit anymore. Los Angelenos are accustomed to traffic, but not the foot kind. All the bread lines in communist Russia can’t compare to the queue clogging up the sidewalk perimeter of Exposition Park at the start of the 11th annual FYF Festival.
