“I have a lot of songs that I want to record, and I want to keep as busy as possible,” says Brooklyn singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten, whose sophomore LP epic is earning universal praise from critics. With two albums released since 2009, and a third planned for 2011, Van Etten might be making up for lost time. The New Jersey native, who began writing songs in high school, took a career detour when she attended college in Tennessee to study music and recording. She dropped out of school after only a year and became involved in a destructive long-term relationship that undermined her confidence in songwriting and prevented her from performing. “There were some days where it was so bad that I never thought I’d be able to get out of that situation at all,” she says. Sharon Van Etten returns with her follow-up to 2019’s Remind Me Tomorrow. Made during the pandemic in her home studio in her new hometown of Los Angeles (following many years of being based in New York), it feels like her most personal statement in quite some time, perhaps even echoing back to her early CD-R releases and sparse, claustrophobic, deeply uncomfortable uneasy listening, folk-inflected debut LP, Because I Was in Love, from all the way back in 2009. Before she starred in the Netflix show The OA and became known as a jill of all trades, balancing a successful music career with acting, going to school for psychology, and starting a family, Sharon Van Etten was a Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter on the cusp of becoming an indie star but still years away from wider recognition. It’s been five long, eventful years since Sharon Van Etten put out her magnificent, troubling, infinitely gorgeous Are We There, during which time the Brooklyn troubadour has ventured into both motherhood and television acting, while we’ve patiently waited for album number five from one of the more important songwriters and performers of the 21st century. On Sharon Van Etten‘s latest, we find the 33-year old Brooklynite grappling even further with the complexities and rewards of love. It’s a skill predicated on an articulate presentation of the emotionally wrought—one that’s been gradually developed across three LPs and a career spanning upwards of a decade. More

Sharon Van Etten’s last album, Epic, was a way forward for her, both musically and psychologically. That album featured her first stab at warm, bristling full-band arrangements and a heavy dose of emotional bloodletting following a rather traumatic break-up (one of the ex’s most egregious and repeated crimes was telling Van Etten she was a lousy songwriter/musician).
