Welcome to the 35th Songs of the Week of 2021. It was a blockbuster week for new songs, with lots of strong contenders. We tried to show a bit of restraint and keep it to an already over-stuffed Top 12, but then we just went for it with a Top 14. I mean, whose going to tell us we can’t pick 14 favorite songs? Welcome to the second Songs of the Week of 2021. It was a little less trying than last week, but Donald Trump did earn the dubious honor of being the first ever president to be impeached twice. Nov 13, 2020
By Christopher Roberts (with Joey Arnone)
Welcome to the 42nd Songs of the Week of 2020. We haven’t done a Songs of the Week in three weeks. Because of last week’s presidential election there were hardly any new songs of note released and we were too on edge awaiting the outcome to be decided to focus on new music. The week before was the run up to Halloween and there were certainly some worthy songs then, but for whatever reason we didn’t get Songs of the Week finished in time and abandoned it. So this week’s Songs of the Week covers the last three weeks, but mainly songs from this week and two weeks ago. More

There was a trend this week for artists to share two songs at once, rather than just one. We saw it with Blood Orange, Trevor Powers, Elvis Costello, Jungle, Cornershop, and Fucked Up (and Pussy Riot released three songs this week). In cases where the artist made our main best songs list we tried to pick just one song, although that proved challenging with our #1. More

Hello again. We haven’t done a Songs of the Week for almost five weeks, since June 9. We were on vacation from mid to late June and then when we returned there really weren’t enough compelling songs last week to justify doing Songs of the Week lists, mainly because of the July 4th holiday being smack dab in the middle of the week and so labels mainly avoided sharing new songs. As fellow writer Mike Hilleary pointed out, the ratio of sleep to bands at SXSW is somewhat skewed. This is of course, an understatement, as it seems even my dreams (whenever I close my eyes long enough to have them) have been rented out for showcases. While there’s no accounting for my subconscious booking agency (who seem intent on making it an all Twin Shadow bill), the variety of bands available to the waking world of SXSW is pretty dang impressive. After our second successful Under the Radar day party, the magazine crew opted to hop from venue to venue for the remainder of the evening, as no one showcase was strong enough to demand our full attention.
