Tegan and Sara have always been deliberate in using their platform for social good. In 2012, the Canadian duo appeared on the cover of that year’s Protest Issue wielding a sign that said: “The rights of the minority should never be subject to the whim of the majority.” Sara Quin, who has been making music alongside her identical twin sister, Tegan Quin, for over two decades, fondly remembers how those words strongly resonated with her. Looking back on the half decade prior to the release of Tegan and Sara’s 2004 breakthrough album, So Jealous, Sara Quin likens those years to being underwater. She and her sister, Tegan, had enjoyed a substantial wave of press when they signed to Neil Young’s Vapor Records in 1999, but after three albums and five years of building a small, devoted fanbase through touring, things weren’t progressing the way that they wanted. In order to rise back to the figurative surface, and for their music endeavor to become a financially viable career choice, something needed to change. More

Transcending Ignorance with Compassion

One continent is barely big enough to contain Tegan and Sara Quin. They’re Western Canadians by birth, but years ago Sara Quin headed east, to live in Montréal and New York, leaving the territory left of the Continental Divide to sister Tegan. Still, twins are twins, and 3,000 miles can’t change the fact that Tegan and Sara’s similarities go beyond appearance and a love of music. In separate interviews for Under the Radar’s Protest Issue, we discovered remarkably similar attitudes in the girls on a host of issues, including assimilation, activism, bullying, and same-sex marriage. And a big revelation in our conversation with Tegan Quin, who divides her time between L.A. and Vancouver: even though her Canadian home base would allow her to marry her longtime girlfriend, the couple has chosen not to, as a matter of principle. We even got a bit of scoop on Tegan and Sara’s seventh studio album, due out in January. More
Seventh Album Due Out in Early 2013
Aug 16, 2012
By John Norris
Earlier this year we spoke to Tegan and Sara about their forthcoming seventh album. (Read that article here.) At the time they had written 36 songs and had just started recording, with plans to work with a multitude of producers. A theme for the album was already coming into place. “Sara and I are both in stable relationships, we’re both at a very stable part of our career,” said Tegan at the time. “We have achieved more than we ever thought we would. In a weird way we’re quite content right now, so I’d say the theme of this record is really different than our last records; it’s not heartbreak, but one of much more empowerment and also a lot of reflection.” More

“I think this is going to be a very door-opening record,” says Tegan Quin, one-half of the Canadian rock duo Tegan and Sara. “I feel like we’ve hit on something that’s going to allow people to connect to it and get into it.” She adds, laughing: “Just like Ace of Base.” More

Born in 1980, Sara Quin was too young to experience the juggernaut that was Phil Collins during the mid-1980s. As a solo artist and the lead singer of Genesis, Collins became a persistent hit-maker and pop culture presence, from his chart-topping theme song to the 1984 film Against All Odds and his 1985 transatlantic Live Aid performances, to the use of “In the Air Tonight” on Miami Vice, and the Genesis track “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight” in Michelob commercials.
