Kip Berman Charts a New Course
Mar 31, 2021
By Matt Conner
When Kip Berman states that everything is different these days, he’s not exaggerating. Since you likely last saw him fronting the indie pop band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Berman is now a family man in a new home in a new city with a new set of priorities. As it turns out, the songs have changed, too. More

Kip Berman can speak at length about music history, eloquently mull over the idea of success, and articulately explain why the word “twee” has lost its power. But The Pains of Being Pure at Heart‘s frontman (and only constant member) admits that he also loves a good old-fashioned play on words. More

“Life is complex—it’s complex for everyone,” The Pains of Being Pure at Heart frontman Kip Berman observes over a plate of breakfast tacos. “It isn’t just dark for people who are in bands. That’s something that bugs me, when bands say, ‘We just feel more because we’re artists!’ No, everyone feels the same amount of feelings. Just because you can pick up a guitar and write a song about it doesn’t make it any more valid than anyone else.” More

Over a decade has passed since The Pains of Being Pure at Heart dropped their self-titled debut EP. Massively indebted to bands like The Pastels and The Field Mice, their star shone brightly for a while, even resulting in them headlining several festivals in both Europe and the States. More

Since forming in 2007, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have released three full-length albums along with a series of 7” singles and EPs. While the albums are all very good to excellent, they tend to try out ideas that would be otherwise out of place on their EPs and occasionally that leaves weaker material. More

Following numerous complaints of last year’s festival being far too crowded, this year Goldenvoice the organizers of Coachella 2011 made significant changes to address that concern. A wristband with a microchip is now necessary at all time during the festival, scanned at no fewer than two checkpoints on the way into the festival. Additionally, they also sold less tickets than last year. The result of both thus far (it might just be that many attendees couldn’t get Friday off from work) is a greatly improved experience. Even during headliner Kings of Leon there was plenty of room to maneuver and find a decent spot to watch the show. So in that respect, it’s already a great improvement on last year. This year’s music started off with an impressive array of talent, but had little in the way of jaw-dropping moments the festival has become famous for. More
