This week’s Songs of the Week is packed. Firstly boygenius, the new supergroup featuring Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers, released three songs this week and all were worthy of the list. Under the Radar is excited to announce the full details of our 2016 Protest Issue (out September, October, and into November), which is out now both digitally and on newsstands. We’ve done a Protest Issue every U.S. Presidential election year since 2004 and as before this issue features articles examining the intersection of music and politics and photo shoots with musicians holding protest signs of their own making. Then in mid-October we will be launching our charity Protest Auction, in which we auction off all the protest signs in the issue, with all profits going to the American Cancer Society. More

Under the Radar‘s 2010 SXSW day party went down on Saturday, March 20, from 12 - 6 p.m., at Klub Krucial, and was sponsored by JanSport. It was the fifth year that Under the Radar has hosted a SXSW party and the magazine’s sixth SXSW party over all (one year we hosted two). The cold and rainy weather didn’t deter enthusiastic music fans and music industry professionals from venturing out on the last day of SXSW. Total Depravity, the fifth album by English indie rock quintet The Veils, is brilliantly haunting and ruefully grim. Fans of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and latter day Tom Waits will find much to love on this album, as the band’s chilly instrumentation and frontman Finn Andrews’ theatrical vocals evoke the Gothic tinge of the former, while the singer’s lyricism hews close to the devilish weirdness of the latter.
