There was a trend this week for artists to share two songs at once, rather than just one. We saw it with Blood Orange, Trevor Powers, Elvis Costello, Jungle, Cornershop, and Fucked Up (and Pussy Riot released three songs this week). In cases where the artist made our main best songs list we tried to pick just one song, although that proved challenging with our #1. More

Hello again. We haven’t done a Songs of the Week for almost five weeks, since June 9. We were on vacation from mid to late June and then when we returned there really weren’t enough compelling songs last week to justify doing Songs of the Week lists, mainly because of the July 4th holiday being smack dab in the middle of the week and so labels mainly avoided sharing new songs. There were some solid contenders for this week’s Songs of the Week list. It was a toss up between #1 and #2, it could’ve gone either way. If we were doing a “Best Use of a Song in a TV Show This Week” list, then first place probably would’ve gone to the use of U2’s “With or Without You” in the surprising and amazing series finale of FX’s The Americans. Underworld is a fluid entity. At its core are Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, but revolving around the two is a number of influences, and emanating from the duo are countless products. From Darren Emerson and Darren Price, to Brian Eno and Danny Boyle, Underworld’s staple ingredients of fluttering synth lines, mind-melting loops, and stream of consciousness lyrics have been treated, molded, and decorated. Whether it has been defining the filmTrainspotting, or enhancing Eno’s Pure Scenius Project, or being re-imagined in the group’s download-only Riverrun series, Underworld has maintained a niche for itself at the forefront of progressive dance music. They’ve even just remixed David Lynch. More

Rick Smith and Karl Hyde are back with a dance party to soundtrack the upcoming end of decade—which has a whiff of End of Days doom so it’s helpful they’ve released a box set of seven CDs—enough music to rave, rage, and reflect till the sun comes up again. Underworld’s eighth album DRIFT Series 1 is a multi-sensory feast created guerilla-style: A culmination of a year’s experiment in creative expression-through poetry, visual art, electronica, and film. Underworld have always hid a decidedly punk aesthetic beneath their crunching electronics. While hardly as confrontational as the all-gobbing, safety-pin-punctured acts of the late 1970s, Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have tended to take a similar sneering look at the subcultures around them, never afraid to call out bullshit over their propulsive techno throbs.
