Reviews

Apr 12, 2018

In delivering one of 2017’s most impressive and experimental releases, Zola Jesus came good on a promise of reliability that she had made nearly a decade ago. Her early releases transcended category and genre, providing a shining light for someone who wanted something inexcusably and unashamedly different. More

Over the course of Taiga‘s 11 superlative tracks, Danilova has set the stage for a new phase in her career as Zola Jesus. More

Aug 27, 2013

When bringing together two such eclectic, often esoteric artists as Australian avant-garde musician J.G. Thirlwell and Wisconsin’s Russian-American experimental rock singer Nika Roza Danilova, aka Zola Jesus, there is an inherent fear that the end product could turn out to be messy, over-thought, and far too obtuse for its own good. Aug 29, 2011

It’s deceptively easy to see the career of French musician Serge Gainsbourg as one continuous punchline. With his distinctive vocal style—a muttered sing-speech—parodied almost into oblivion since his rise to popularity in the 1960s, the inclusion of his music in film or television seems to automatically indicate the horny bachelor, the ill-conceived seduction, or (horror of horrors) hipsters aiming to embrace kitsch with both hands. Last night at the Hollywood Bowl however, cool was the name of the game—as Beck, Zola Jesus, Victoria Legrand (of Beach House), Mike Patton, Ed Droste (of Grizzly Bear), The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Lulu Gainsbourg, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, sang, spoke and cooed their tributes to the late performer. Mar 23, 2010

A lo-fi goth EP dipped into the synth-coated melodrama of the 1980s, Stridulum reaches for the depth of human emotion, and often gets there. However, while intensely personal and beautifully constructed, it often teeters on the edge of excess, as Zola Jesus (née Nika Roza Danilova) allows her larger-than-life ambitions to translate into a singularly oppressive tone.
