From the Road Part 5: White Sea’s Morgan Kibby on Tour with M83
Peace Down Under
Feb 14, 2012 M83
It’s amazing how far away I feel whenever I’m in Australia. Far from those I love, far from any semblance of reality…The flight from London to Sydney is brutal. It’s actually debasing. You end up being more animal than human by the end of it, and by the time we arrived in Brisbane I was convinced I was in a waking dream. I’ll be brief on this topic, but our first show of the Laneway Festival was a damn disaster. I have never in my entire career ever felt so embarrassed over a performance. Between the insane tech difficulties and starting the show ten minutes before curfew…it was just a nightmare. Entering and leaving a stage to boos and hollers is one thing, but knowing we couldn’t do our best despite all efforts is a shameful thing. We are genuinely sorry, Brisbane.
Next was New Zealand. What a place. My first time there and hopefully not my last time visiting. In a gesture of karmic redemption, we had one of the most fun and energetic festival shows we’ve ever played. I made some new musician friends earlier in the day, saw my friend Thom from The Naked and Famous and left the festival ground exhausted but satisfied: mission accomplished. Though we were all fading, we were somehow motivated to go out, and I can tell you now, that it was an adventure. Someone mentioned in passing that there was a strip club called mermaids that featured beautiful women swimming in giant tanks like…well like mermaids. We couldn’t help it. We went. 80 dollars later we were in and there was no water tank, one very bored stripper and the smell of regret wafting over everyone. After a quick exit it was back to the hotel and straight to a nightcap and then bed.
I set out the next day early with Sarah, our amazing lighting engineer, on a much-needed break/adventure. I was almost giddy with the prospect of getting in a car, putting on a sundress and coming and going as I pleased, even if just for a moment. We had a late lunch after exploring a nearby town just north of Auckland, and a local shop owner suggested we visit Goat Island in Matheson Bay. Sarah and I hadn’t really gotten a chance before then to bond, and we found ourselves looking at the beautiful lush countryside and talking about the nitty gritty details of ourselves. It was utterly nourishing to connect with someone else and we arrived at Goat island breathing peacefully. It was worth the drive. The water was clear, the beach small and uncrowded—so we rented snorkeling gear and floated with manta rays, fish and swaying gardens of kelp. We stopped and bought plums and ice cream on the way back and arrived in Auckland like sleepy puppies, happy but weary to the bone.
We were generously taken out to dinner by the amazing boys and girls of The Naked and Famous, and after a beautiful meal and lovely company, we collapsed. I was genuinely sad to leave New Zealand. There was a peace there that I would love to explore more, but so it goes. Creegan, our front of house engineer, set off early before our plane to get the mermaids entrance stamp tattooed on his hand (hilarious), we all ate airport sushi, and with a collective sigh we were off to Melbourne. Hopefully decent shows and some more time in the ocean await us there.

It’s always a treat to read blogs/tour diaries from artists, as it presents an interesting side of the music that we as fans don’t often consider. For us…we wait and wait…hoping to get tix. Once tix are acquired, we hurry up and wait some more, for the show date. On show date, it’s a long a dreary day of anticipation, watching the digital minute hand blink like a lidless eye. BUT…at the end of the day, the show is the peak, with the release of all that is inside.
From the artist side, we become familiar with the internalization of being on someone else’s clock, being jettisoned half-way across the world and subsequent time zones only to reincarnate one’s self in another place, heady technical issues, and lost ice cream cones. It’s not until we get this glimpse that the fan (might) get the sense that the euphoric daze WE live in while listening to the words and notes of the band’s expression, is only a minute idea in the life of a band.
Thanks for the post Morgan. While I wish the ENTIRE trip would have been orgasmic, at least you were able to salvage some moments on stage, gather yourself among the wilds of down under, and make a few friends along the way.
Cheers.

I’m taking my test there soon as well. I just found this: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/drivered_for-cops/message/242 which looks like it has a pretty good analysis of the roads you will be driving on. I don’t know if you drive the same way with every examiner though.

There are no treatments available other than taking them to a Veterinarian who do the treatment and monitors the dog. Have had dogs that went through it and survived but were never the same. One of my dogs seemed to have gone through it OK only to collapse a few days later and passed away.

They have an offer for a free trial too so you could see if it works for you without spending an arm and a leg! I’ll include the link below so you can check it out if you would like.

White skinned people are safer when they keep out of bright sunlight because of the risk of skin cancer.Dark skinned people has never absorbed as much sunlight anyway, and modern life has forced them to wear clothes and work indoors to a very great extent.
