I Watched 416 Movies in 2024

399 Feature Films and 17 Short Films

Jan 31, 2025

As I did in 2023, in 2024 I kept a detailed log of every film I watched, all as part of my quest to watch as many movies I’d never seen before as possible. The ideal was to watch at least one film a day and adding it all up, it looks like I more than accomplished that. I watched 416 films in 2024—17 short films and 399 feature length films.

Each month I tried to watch at least one film from each decade, stretching from the 1920s to the 2020s. As I tend to multitask while watching most films, the 1920s were hardest due to the intertitles on silent films requiring my full attention, although I did also seek out some early sound films from the late ’20s, talkies as they were called then. Similarly, it was difficult to watch too many foreign language films due to the subtitles. This year I hope to find a way to watch more foreign films.

In March, my birth month, I tried to watch as many films from my birth year, 1976, as possible. When Kris Kristofferson died in September, I viewed some of his films. As a big fan of comic book movies, in 2025 I watched several superhero films I’d never seen before (most were pretty terrible, hence why I had avoided them in the past).

As I’ve alluded to, the only way I can accomplish watching so many films a year is to do so while doing other tasks, such as checking my email, writing news items, doing the dishes or laundry. I try to go to the cinema once a week, if there’s anything good showing. Our town has a three-screen theater downtown that shows mainstream Hollywood fare for the most part, along with a drive-in theater just out of town with similar programming. To see indie films and awards-contenders we have to drive at least 45-60 minutes away. Much of my watching was done via my basement makeshift home theater. There are no fancy chairs, but we have a pull down screen, a good BenQ projector, and 5.1 surround sound. We have regular screenings there with friends and friends of our 12-year-old daughter Rose. As well as my goal to watch as many films as possible that I’ve never seen, I am also on a mission to instill a love of film in Rose and her friends.

In the list below, I have detailed each film I watched, the year it came out, the director, the manner of watching it, and my rating out of 10. I have also indicated if it was my first time watching the movie.

Why make such a list public? I’m not sure. Perhaps it is to brag or celebrate the accomplishment. Although certainly there are much greater accomplishments than watching films. Perhaps it is to justify keeping such a list and watching so many films.

I have long been a cinephile, the son of two film lovers who took me to see many classics as a child. I even went to film school and worked in the film industry before starting Under the Radar. Last year I watched 234 films (as detailed here). So far in 2025 I have watched 37 films, with another film screening with friends planned for tonight. No matter how many I watch, there are still countless other films from past decades, as well as new films, that call out to me. Some are classics, some are oddities. But I rarely regret watching any of them.
